Now, I’m not here to teach you how to weave a wicker basket, but just take a quick look at this picture tutorial with instructions on how to make one. http://www.bushcraft.ridgeonnet.com/basicbasket.htm . It shows just how much goes into making a wicker basket. Baskets are still made by hand, and even though these basket makers are really good at what they do, it still takes some time and many steps to finish one.
I should know. Back in high school (Syosset High School) , I choose to make a wicker basket for a class project. I made a Navajo Native American Wedding basket that was used in wedding ceremonies. The actual basket was supposed to be about 14 to 18 inches in diameter, but after 25 hours, mine was only 7 inches. Yes, I soaked and dyed the reeds myself, but that wasn’t what took most of the time, it was the actual weaving. Here’s a picture of what mine looked like. The design has particular ceremonial meaning for a wedding.
I won’t go into detail here, but if you are interested, here’s an article I found that explains it all. http://www.navajocrafts.net/site/618450/page/853656.
I got an A++ on that project and ended up giving it to my teacher, Mr Lukazuski, because he loved it so much. That was a long, long time ago, but I’ll bet he still has it.
So, the next time you see anything wicker, take a moment to appreciate the time and skill it took to make it….and while you’re at it, send one filled with interesting goodies for any occasion.
Hi All, Over the years we realized that we just needed more space. We thought about enlarging the shop and moving things around, but that just didn’t work out…so we finally made the decision and moved to a larger facility at the beginning of the year, but I am very happy to say that we are still in Huntington! Even though you can’t physically visit the shop anymore, you can still visit us online or call us anytime. In lieu of trudging out in the traffic, & enduring this wicked winter weather to pick up a gift or gift basket, we are now offering a FREE LOCAL drop off service! We have created gifts and gift baskets online just for this purpose. So stay in your nice, warm home or office and visit our “Showroom” page, our “Gifts Under 20$” page and our “Gift Basket Specials” page. It’s just like you are back in the shop. Take a look around, pick what you like best and have us bring it right to you.
We are comfortably settling in to our new surroundings. For the most part, it’s business as usual, except now we have more space to work in, and that’s a great thing!
We do miss our old shop at 220 East Main Street. Heck, we were there for 16 years, much like when we left our original shop at 170 New York Ave. We were there for 10 years…but we’re so excited about what the future will bring. We look back with fond memories, but look forward to creating new ones… which leads me to this blog. ..
We will be posting video tutorials on gift basket making tricks, offering interesting basket trivia, tidbits and articles, and informing you of new exciting products we will be carrying, and welcome all of your comments.
So stay tuned…
